Common Spiders Found Around Homes

There are over 40,000 species of spiders found through out the world. This article will go over a few of the most common species that are found in and around homes.

By being able to identify and knowing the basic information about different spiders, you can more easily control them. You will understand where they are likely to build their webs in homes. Plus, you will be able to identify potentially dangerous species, like black widows, who have a very venomous bites. This will enable you deal with different species of spiders in different ways.

Wolf Spider

(Lycosidae) Found all over the world, these spiders feed on insects. Their bite is venomous, but not harmful to humans.

Fishing Spider

(Dolomedes) This is a semi-aquatic spider which will be found near pools or ponds. They eat insects and small fish.

Jumping Spider

(Salticidae) These spiders can jump by using a hydraulic fluid system in their limbs. Found all over, feeding on insects.

Funnel Web Spider

(Agelenidae) These spiders have funnel shaped webs in grass and bushes. Their webs are shared with other spiders.

Sac Spider

(Clubionidae) They typically live on the ground under leaves, bark, or stones. They don’t build webs, but instead make silk retreats.

Hobo Spider

(Tegenaria agrestis) A member of the funnel web family. This spider is poisonous but not fatal to humans.

Black Widow

(Latrodectus) This red bellied spider is well known across the world. Its bite is very venomous and can sometimes be fatal.

Brown Recluse

(Loxosceles reclusa) Also known as the violin spider, this common spider has a very poisonous bite that can be fatal.

Cellar spider

(Pholcus phalangioides) Also called daddy longlegs, these spiders are often found in dark places. They feed on insects.

Domestic House

(Tegenaria domestica) Close relative to the hobo spider, these build a funnel shaped web to catch their prey.
